CEP’s inaugural National Lighthouse Award for Large Urban School Districts was awarded to the Houston Independent School District (HISD) for serving as a beacon to other large urban districts for specific measures that the district has taken in cultivating and nurturing quality character education efforts. Through districtwide professional development, district-business/community partnerships, and a long-term commitment to character education that began in the superintendent’s office, HISD has established exemplary models for administrative initiatives supporting character education in large urban districts. HISD has maintained its commitment to character development for more than 15 years. It has continually assessed its practices and consistently worked toward improvement.
