Sanford N. McDonnell Lifetime Achievement Award
CEP is Seeking Nominations for Lifetime Achievement Award in Character Education.
Sanford McDonnell

Sanford N. McDonnell

Each year, the Washington DC-based Character Education Partnership (CEP) honors one individual for his or her long and steadfast commitment to the field of character education. The person so honored receives the prestigious Sanford N. McDonnell Award for Lifetime Achievement in Character Education.

This special award is named in honor of Mr. Sandy McDonnell who dedicated much of his adult life to developing good character in others.  He served as National President of Boy Scouts of America, instituted a company-wide ethics training program as CEO of McDonnell Douglas Aircraft, founded and led CHARACTERplus in St. Louis, and was the founding Chairman of the Board for CEP.  Sandy chaired the Board for 12 years and then served as Chairman Emeritus until he passed away on March 19, 2012.

CEP is now seeking nominations for the 2012 “Sandy Award,” as it is informally called.  Please send nominations to Sarah Twardock, at stwardock@character.org. You may also mail them to her, c/o of CEP, at 1025 Connecticut Ave., NW, Suite 1011, Washington, DC 20036. They may be sent to Sarah by FAX to (202) 296-7779.

All nominations must include a maximum one page, single-spaced narrative summary describing the candidate’s long-term achievements and contributions relative to the award criteria (see next page for details). Please be specific describing the candidate’s work, showing reach and impact where possible. We ask that you also provide contact information for the person you are nominating and yourself, to include email addresses and phone numbers.

The winner of this year’s award will be chosen by a committee comprised of previous Sandy Award winners. The recipient will receive complimentary transportation, two-night hotel accommodations, and registration for the 2012 National Forum on Character Education, which will take place November 1-3 in Washington, DC. The Sandy Award will be presented at the Forum before an audience of educators from across the nation and world.

SANDY AWARD CRITERIA

The recipient of the Sandy Award for Lifetime Achievement in Character Education is an individual who, over a significant period of time, has been an outstanding role model of good character and has also met one or more of the following criteria:

  • Strong and widely influential advocate of quality character education, or
  • Outstanding contributor to any or all of the domains in which character development takes place (school, family, community, sports, etc.); these contributions should reflect the implications for education and, ideally, for character/moral/social-emotional education (as opposed, say, to purely psychological research that does not address educational applications), or
  • Friend and supporter of character education—for example, by mentoring character education leaders or supporting the field philanthropically—in a way that has made a significant difference.

Notes:

  • All nominations must be received no later than Friday, June 1, 2012.
  • Each person may nominate no more than two candidates.
  • Please direct questions to Joe Mazzola, at jmazzola@character.org.
