Advocacy Update

CEP is committed to being your ears, eyes and voice regarding the latest character education news in our nation’s capital. Here is the latest from Washington:

  • Vice President Biden recommended $50 Million in grant funding toward the goal of creating safe and nurturing school climates as part of his “Now is the Time” gun violence reduction proposal. That was a great first step, but the work doesn’t end there. Let your elected representatives (link to “Call to Action” on homepage) know that you support this initiative!
  • The ‘Conditions for Learning Coalition’ (link: www.conditionsforlearning.org), for which CEP is a member of the steering committee, is an education and advocacy coalition with a straightforward goal: increase federal investments in proven programs that improve conditions for learning. The first of several monthly briefings was held on Capitol Hill this week, entitled “Social and Emotional Learning: Essential Skills for Schook Safety, Positive Behavior and Higher Student Achievement.” President & CEO Mark Hyatt was in attendance.
  • CEP will host a Congressional Briefing in July, and we want to hear from you! Please send any topic requests and speaker suggestions to mjones@character.org. We take our role as your voice seriously- so don’t hesitate to let us know what is important to you.
  • New at this year’s Forum: Capitalize on your visit to Washington, and make time to visit your Senator or Representative. CEP will do all it can to facilitate such meetings by providing contact information, talking points, and support materials. You have the stories which show the impact of character education in the lives of children throughout the nation which our leaders need to hear!
