This session will explore how the context of urban schools influences how character education is taught. There will be an examination of urban elementary school culture and ways in which character education programs need to be modified for children attending urban schools.

A Counselor's Journey in Character Education

School Counselors quite often find themselves in the primary role of developing or maintaining character education within their school. In this session, I will illustrate ways in which I feel we need to augment the way we reach our current students. You will be exposed to one Counselor’s journey from those formative and teachable moments in which one realizes the importance of character to those opportunities that positively affect change in the lives of students, staff, and parents.

This imaginative and fun session introduces K-8 grade educators to dynamic interactive storytelling techniques that enhance socio-emotional learning. Through direct interaction, attendees will learn how to hold the attention of students, inspire group participation and effectively teach positive values through the practice of masterful storytelling. With emphasis placed on multicultural stories, educators will learn how stories can be 'brought to life' and used to build stronger school communities and safer learning environments.
