Fairbrook Elementary, located 20 minutes from the center of Dayton, Ohio, is highly regarded for its inclusive model of education. Students with special needs are integrated in all aspects of the school, and there are no self-contained classrooms. Even when Fairbrook did not make AYP because of low scores in the special needs subgroup in reading, the staff just took additional steps to address the learning needs of this subgroup. Teachers work hard to create a caring community and ensure that all children are included and valued for their special gifts. All attend field trips with classmates and participate fully in the 5th grade leadership initiatives. One student-led initiative became a district-wide collaborative project called “Extreme Take Over.” It was decided that each school in the district would fill a school bus with food. The slogan was “Fill a bus—Drive out Hunger.” A grocery stored donated bags, the Fairbrook “Dens” (cross-age mentoring homerooms) filled the bags, and the 5th graders loaded the buses.
