The Maryland Center for Character Education and the Maryland State Department of Education are pleased to announce the establishment of the Maryland Schools of Character (MSOC) awards program in conjunction with the Character Education Partnership's National Schools of Character (NSOC) awards program. MSOC recognizes schools or districts that demonstrate an outstanding character education initiative yielding positive results in student behavior, school climate, and academic performance. The best applicants will advance to the NSOC competition, becoming an NSOC finalist.

2009 Maryland Schools of Character will be honored at an awards ceremony sponsored by the Maryland Center for Character Education in September 2009.
To be eligible to apply, a school must have been engaged in character education for a minimum of three full years, starting no later than December 2006 for the 2010 awards. Districts need to have been engaged in character education for a minimum of four full years, starting no later than December 2005.
