Character Education on the Global Stage
Merle Schwartz, Director of Education and Research, spoke at a conference in Estonia, Sept. 26. Celebrating the 90th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia, the conference, titled “Holding Common Values” is designed to introduce to the public a values program designed by the Centre for Ethics and the Ministry of Education.

“The programme of values improvement is in its first stage,” said Triin Pisuke, Project Manager of the Centre for Ethics University of Tartu via e-mail. “Therefore, a public debate about its content is needed. We hope that the conference can initiate the debate in media.” Pisuke said the debate should involve topics such as how to improve school atmosphere and how to involve young people more actively.Dr. Schwartz spoke on “The Success of Character Education” sharing how character education works in the United States.

The conference is held by the Centre for Ethics of the University of Tartu and by the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research. The conference also celebrated the 90th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia.

Approximately 120 intellectuals, educators, school masters, teachers, some ministers and the workers of the Ministry of Education and Research participated, according to Pisuke.
The conference covered the question of preservation and improvement of values that are needed in order to ensure the further development of the Republic of Estonia. “As educated people have crucial importance in success of the country,” Pisuke wrote, “the conference also tries to discover the ways for the improvement of Estonian educational system.”

CEP Staff Attend Litter, Graffiti
Prevention Campaign Launch

The District of Columbia Department of Public Works (DPW) spends roughly $20 million annually to pick up litter (about 6,000 tons of it) and approximately $1 million for supplies and services relating to graffiti removal. Graffiti is the most common type of vandalism, accounting for almost 35% of property vandalism nationally. Arrest data from 17 major cities show that 50 to 70% of all street-level graffiti is created by suburban adolescents, predominantly males between the ages of 12 and 19.

Community leaders, businesspeople and educators have grown increasingly concerned about this issue and have decided to take action. DPW, Connect with Kids (CWK) and WUSA 9 have launched the litter and graffiti prevention program Not in Our DC! Pledge to Keep the Capital Clean to promote healthy, responsible behavior in an effort to reduce litter and graffiti by educating District residents – especially youth leaders – on this issue. DPW and CWK went to the source, District of Columbia youth, to learn what motivates them to keep their neighborhoods clean. Based on feedback, DPW and CWK created materials to increase awareness and give community leaders and youth the tools to become agents of change in their communities. The campaign launch consisted of two town hall-style meetings – one for DC youth and one for local adults – held at the WUSA 9 building in Tenleytown.

In order to receive an Implementation Guide with Not in Our DC! campaign materials, as well as additional resources and information, go to www.connectwithkids.com/notinourdc. The Implementation Guide includes the DVD, Not in Our DC! Pledge to Keep the Capital Clean; Group Discussion and Individual Self-Reflection Questions; a Fact Sheet; and a Parent Tip Sheet. ____________________________________________________________________________

Board Member Honored

CEP Board member Dick Pieper has been named the new Chairman of the Board of Trustees for The Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership, an international non-profit organization based in Westfield, Indiana.

The servant leadership movement is based on the works of noted scholar and leader Robert Greenleaf, for whom their Center is named. They base their approach to leadership on key pillars. The first one is that servant leaders must be men and women of impeccable character. CEP Board President David Fisher notes, “In addition to his great passion and strong support for character education and positive youth development in America’s schools, Dick has long been a national champion for adult servant-based leadership. He understands and appreciates how the two fit together, hand-in-glove.”  Fortunately for CEP, Pieper remains equally committed to CEP and its mission. He will continue to be a highly engaged member of a great leadership team.

Character Education Goes International
Two schools in Hong Kong recently invited CEP Senior Consultant Barbara Luther to visit Po Leung Kuk Primary and Creative Primary to share ideas about building collaborative cultures and the development of character education in youth. Energetic students sang to welcome her and Dennis Koo and Clio Chan, principals of the two schools, led teacher focus groups. Parents attended as well to participate in the activities. It was an educational and uplifting experience with one more reminder that Character Education has truly begun to span the globe!
