Become an Advocate
We encourage all NSOC to help spread the word on the benefits of effective character education. This can be as simple as reminding parents and community about how CE distinguishes your school from the too-often negative stories about schools covered by various media.

At the Forum, you will begin to learn about leadership opportunities available to administrators and other leaders on staff from NSOC. NSOC leaders have been featured in CEP videos, participated in radio interviews, spoken at Senate briefings and national conferences, and participated in and led CEP webinars, for example. Other leadership opportunities will be presented to you by CEP at the Forum and throughout the year.

We also invite your help for stronger advocacy with state and federal legislatures. Somehow with all of the focus on AYP and standardized testing, the importance of educating for character has vanished from education discussions, and you are our best proof of its importance.

Here’s an example. On May 12, 2011 CEP joined with other organizations to sponsor a hearing on the importance of social, emotional, and character development while Congress debates the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. One of our former NSOC principals testified at this hearing, and her remarks really captured the attention of the crowd. (See testimony by Kristen Pelster.) Before the hearing, CEP sent an e-mail blast to our constituents asking them to write their senators and encourage them to attend the briefing. Many did so. We appreciate how busy you all are, but any time you can help with these efforts, everyone benefits.
