Character education has long been an integral part of Cotswold Elementary School’s focus. Since becoming an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, the school’s character focus has shifted to include the IB model. The IB curriculum was developed by staff members, using the IB guidelines, and thus there was strong buy-in and modeling. “Everyone in this building takes responsibility for character education,” states former principal Denise Hearne. “Whatever we’re asking the kids to do, we do ourselves. This has fostered whole school ownership.” Staff members agree that the shift to the IB model was a “perfect fit” for Cotswold, given the school’s long-time commitment to character and service, as both of these are integral components of the IB program. Academic content is effectively woven into each IB unit, and students work in cooperative groups—researching, planning, and carrying out projects. All classes have reading buddies, class meetings, and “voice and choice” in the classroom.
Outreach: During their 2011-12 award year, staff at Cotswold presented at state and national conferences, responded to inquiries from other educators, and submitted an article for publication. “Becoming an NSOC for the second time in 10 years has been such a stimulus for recognition in our community. Each day Cotswold strives to be an example of ‘doing the right thing even when no one is looking.’ We strive to make this motto evident to all students, parents, volunteers, and other educators who visit our school, ” said Mary Hooks, IB coordinator.
Signature Practices
Lesson Plan: Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse and the Action Cycle
Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes (Hodder Children’s Books, 1998) is an excellent book to use to model reflection and teach the action cycle. I use this lesson to set up expectations for reflective behavior in our classroom for the year. We then keep blank reflection sheets for the students to use when they must take a “time out.” Students must fill it out the sheet before they can return to the regular activity.
Promising Practice: Recharge on a Road Trip – The Power of Staff Retreats
Cotswold Elementary has used weekend staff retreats as a time for professional development, renewal, and reflection. The staff members work in professional learning communities to plan instruction and get to know each other on a more personal level.
