Duncan Elementary School
Fort Hood, TX
Killeen Independent School District

Duncan Elementary School is one of four elementary schools on the Fort Hood military base, the largest military installation in the world. The school provides a safe haven for military children. Parent Gary Tomblin describes the children at the school as “different in that they know life and death,” adding, “[T]heir parents are part of an organization where character is part of who they are. For everyone at Duncan, character is a way of life.” Duncan’s character education program teaches students basic values, and it permeates all aspects of the school. Students determine the direction of club activities. All service learning projects are now part of the lesson plans that teachers have generated or are part of the planning process of the student-led clubs. Rigorous reading in the content areas, reading intervention programs, and overall high expectations allow students to thrive in an atmosphere of academic challenge.

Signature Practices

Lesson Plan: Amazing Grace
Students will discuss a story about a girl who had a goal, realized she had some obstacles that might prevent her from reaching it, and found a way to achieve her goal anyway.
Lesson Plan: Citizenship in Action
Citizenship is doing your share to make your school and community a better place. Instructor should begin lesson with discussion questions that lead each class to create its own citizenship poster. The poster should include a class definition for citizenship along with an illustration.
Promising Practice: Random Acts of Kindness
Sponsored by our Character Education Club, "Random Acts of Kindness" has been intended from the beginning to be an anonymous way of building morale and self-esteem in others.
Promising Practice: Traits of a Duncan Athlete
PE staff consulted the Character Committee for training and recommendations for initiating a character component into the PE curriculum. Using school-wide monthly character traits, the PE staff began to incorporate each of the Six Pillars of Character into their lesson plans.
Promising Practice: Welcome New Dragons!
New students receive a colorful folder that greets them with a big Duncan Dragon “Welcome”. The folder includes a personal message and token from the school principal (pencil grip), librarian (bookmark), nurse (“I feel better” sticker), school counselors (sticker sheet), and a Student Online Achievement Resources mousepad.
Promising Practice: Deployment Support Group
Duncan Elementary School has instituted “Deployment Support Groups.” These are small group meetings facilitated by the school’s counselors. Through these groups, students with a deployed parent have a special place to meet weekly to focus on problem solving communication skills, in addition to getting a little extra tender loving care.
