Lincoln Elementary School
Troy, MO
Lincoln County R-III School District

Located in a district and community hit hard by the economy’s downturn, Lincoln works together—just like family—to meet tough challenges. Lucky the Leopard, the Lincoln mascot, greets students in the morning with his paw raised as a reminder of the school touchstone, Show Your Paw, which reinforces the core values of respect, self-control, accountability, and being ready to learn. All teachers are trained in a district-wide reading program, and the entire school has strengthened its focus on math. Learning abilities are addressed with differentiated instruction strategies. Students have an active voice and choice in the character education process. Lincoln promotes caring attachments through monthly buddy programs, cross-grade student mentors, weekly class meetings, and cooperative learning academic centers. According to parent Tracy Hulbert, Lincoln is “an extension of the home, a nurturing environment that feels like family.”

Signature Practices

Lesson Plan: Be a Buddy, Not a Bully
I used this lesson last year with my most difficult students. It gave my students the strategies and coping skills they needed, especially when dealing with bullying and disrespect issues on the playground. After my students created “Respect” and “Be a Buddy, Not a Bully” posters, I often saw the students reminding other students in our classroom what it means to be respectful, referring to their posters!
Promising Practice: Knowledge-A-Thon
Our "Knowledge-A-Thon" (KAT) is our annual fundraiser that involves our entire school community. The premise of the fundraiser is for our kids to have fun learning facts that correlate with their grade level curriculum.
Promising Practice: Just Poppin' in to Welcome You
In an effort to establish relationships with students and their families, the school planned a neighborhood night named “Just Poppin’ In to Welcome You”. The neighborhood night is an event in which the school staff visits families in their neighborhoods to welcome them to a new school year.
Promising Practice: School-Wide Buddy Day
Lincoln Elementary School celebrates a cross-age buddy program as a school-wide culminating event. The event is called "Buddy Day," and the day is full of various activities in which the buddies work together and have fun.
Promising Practice: Boone and Lincoln Elementaries Focus on Peace
Two schools sharing one campus work together to implement a student's idea for a shared cooperative event.
