Uthoff Valley staff creates a welcoming, supportive, and celebratory atmosphere to help all students achieve their personal goals and feel good about their accomplishments. Uthoff Valley builds empathy as well as pro-social skills in students through class meetings, service opportunities, and buddy activities. All students are celebrated through quarterly “Rock On” assemblies, positive referrals, and lunch with the principal. Principal Connie Browning’s first day at UV was on a Rock On Assembly day. “It was the most incredible experience I have ever had. Every student felt great about supporting friends and about meeting their goals.” Uthoff Valley has high rates of parent involvement and volunteerism; a large group of parent volunteers assist with early-release-day activities so that teachers can engage in staff development. Because of the support students get to help them meet their goals, “Everybody feels good about themselves,” says third-grade teacher Mary McCullough.
Outreach: During their 2011-12 award year, Uthoff Valley staff helped other schools applying for SSOC in their state, presented at a state conference, and met with other character education leaders in their district.
Signature Practices
Lesson Plan: Immigration Simulation Day: A Day in the Life of an Immigrant at Ellis Island
Students will transition between four stations to experience a day in the life of an immigrant arriving at Ellis Island.
Promising Practice: Uthoff’s Newest Viking Program
In the Newest Viking Program, the entire school works together to help our new students feel connected as soon as they enter our building. It begins when the family comes to register.
Promising Practice: STOP (Start Telling Other People) Student Infomercials
Teachers and students create video infomercials that inform students of specific strategies to use when they see others being bullied.
Promising Practice: Together We Make a Difference
This practice developed after staff watched a short video called “The Teddy Stoddard Story.” It reminded us of the ways we make a difference in children’s lives daily and the positive effects of praise.
