Walnut Street School
Uniondale, NY
Uniondale UFSD

Walnut Street School, with a diverse student population that is 42 percent African-American and 48 percent Hispanic, initiated a character education program six years ago in response to escalating gang violence. The initiative accomplished much more: It now defines the school’s approach to learning and to life. This school has narrowed, and in some cases reversed, the achievement gap. Character education is now an integral part of the school-wide plan. Quarterly assemblies reinforce character lessons. The school ties character education to sports activities. The G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) program teaches about bullying prevention and learning not to be a bystander. Walnut Street uses multiple strategies to reach every student. Parental support is strong; the school was named a PTA School of Excellence. According to Walnut Street paraprofessional and parent Donna Jackson, “Walnut Street School is not just a school; it’s a home to students, staff, and parents.”

Signature Practices

Lesson Plan: Be an Upstander and Say Something!
Students will listen to scenarios from a website (cartoon-like videos) involving name-calling or bullying, and will, individually and in groups, analyze the different ways one might respond. Also they will read and respond to scenarios on flashcards.
Lesson Plan: It’s Hard to Be Honest
In our school we use common literature to introduce our Character Education Pillars. This lesson is the first grade’s kick-off activity for the Pillar of Honesty. Children need to understand that being honest does not come easy; it is hard work.
Promising Practice: Walnut Street School's Mentoring Partnership Program
The mentoring program at Walnut Street School (WSS) began six years ago when the school was introduced to the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island and the Law Firm of Certilman, Balin, Adler and Hyman, LLP. Since then, the school partnered with them and formed a one-to-one mentoring program of LIKE (Lawyers Involved in Kids’ Education).
