Upon crossing the threshold at Berkeley Elementary School you are greeted in the foyer by a beautiful custom rug that reflects our core values with one simple statement: “Welcome to our Peaceful School.” Using our district character education curriculum based on the CEP’s 11 Principles, Naomi Drew’s Peaceful Classroom in Action and input from all community stakeholders, a common language is heard among staff, students and stakeholders. Everyone communicates the importance of being a peacemaker and making “amazing choices.” Our goal as a learning community is to provide character education as the foundation for success in life.
Our rural Title I school serves 670 students from four-year old preschool through the second grade. For students with diverse ethnicities (52% minority), and a socioeconomic range from the poorest child to the wealthiest, Berkeley Elementary School strives to provide a character education program that teaches the values of acceptance, compassion, friendship, respect and self-discipline. We want our children to be able to get along and work together in groups that reflect the diversity that exists in society today. We are in the age of a technological revolution. Our world is expanded internationally through the click of a mouse. Berkeley Elementary School realizes that a child that cares for all humanity will reach his or her full potential. Learning is more than reading and math. It is about educating the whole child.
