Brentwood Middle School
Brentwood, Missouri
Brentwood School District

Why would Brentwood Middle School, a school that consistently makes AYP, has parent involvement and no major behavioral concerns decide to perform a complete overhaul of its culture and daily activities? We did not want to become stagnant or settle for good; we wanted to strive for excellence. How does one achieve excellence? After studying the views of all stakeholders, it became obvious that we needed to widen our focus from just academic achievement to create a school culture that showcases our core values: kindness, respect, perseverance, and integrity. Thus, our Journey to Excellence was born.

Five years ago, our principal enrolled in LACE to study under Dr. Marvin Berkowitz. Through this work, a Character Cadre was formed to lead the initiative. All members of the BMS community, students, staff, parents and community members were charged as leaders. Teachers developed and infused character into their daily lessons. Students created service learning projects working to improve our school and community. Parents and community members flocked to volunteer their services.

We received the Missouri Gold Star in 2010 and two Promising Practices in 2011 for programs implemented since starting our journey, recognizing our efforts. We have served as an exemplary middle school for NMSA and have begun mentoring others embarking on their own journeys. BMS has become more than good; it is an excellent place to learn and grow. Excellence in all we do and say, that is the Brentwood way!

Testimonials

The greatest change in our school's culture has been the move towards purposeful, deliberate instruction on character. As we focused on teaching character, the staff has become more reflective on its practices.
- Stephen Ryan, Communication Arts Teacher

I like that our school doesn't just teach us "book smarts." Our teachers try to help us learn skills for the future.
- Victoria, eighth grader

It is evident that the staff at BMS knows each child. . . . They know my daughter both as a person and as a student. This allows her and all of her classmates to thrive.
- Michelle Hassmer, Parent

The role of BMS in our community is to prepare our middle school students to become not only educated, responsible citizens, but also ethical young adults.
- Officer Jim McInytre, Brentwood Police Department
