Plattin Primary School
Festus, Missouri
Jefferson R-VII District

Follow the Blue Jay Way is a touchstone that you will hear continuously throughout Plattin Primary. It is used by students, teachers and parents to encourage our character and performance traits and ensure that they are upheld by all members. Our goal is to create a loving community where students, teachers and parents feel like family. Families and teachers desire to be here and work to build a culture that they can be proud of. We build the foundation in academics and have carried forward that same theme for character development. We hope to build a strong foundation of character that our children will carry with them throughout their lifetime. After 5 years of participating in CharacterPlus, our staff realizes that character education is not something new that has been added to our plate but rather “the plate upon which all else is placed.” (Phil Vincent) It is our teachers that have made this building what it is today: a model of character development. Over the years we continue to grow stronger in character education by including our parents, all staff members and the larger community. Our principal’s participation in LACE (Leadership Academy in Character Education), with continuous feedback from Marvin Berkowitz this year, has allowed us to reflect, evaluate and refine our practices and truly mold into a solid foundation of academics and character development.

Testimonials

The greatest change is when we finally had a name for what we had been doing all along. Character ed embedded itself into who we are. . . . We became each other's greatest resource in sharing wonderful things that were being implemented in classrooms.
- Stephanie Heine, 1st grade teacher

I like how we share. . . . My friends at school are really nice to me and they also help me. I'm glad I come to this school.
- Peyton, 2nd grader

Cornerstone of the community, Plattin Primary provides an excellent educational and social foundation for our children, setting the standard for other schools in our District. It is a place in which the community can take pride. . . . It is the best of everything! What a beautiful beginning for a child!
- Lynne Jackson, life-long community member
