Trautwein Elementary School
St. Louis, Missouri
Mehlville RIX District

In education today, there is the concern that we put too much on our teachers’ plates. At Trautwein Elementary School, we understand that Character Education is the plate. It supports everything we do. With character education support, our students become better learners, classmates and citizens; our staff better colleagues and models for our students; our parents more involved. We develop students who are successful academically and socially.

Our Character Education journey began 12 years ago with training as a Caring School Community. As each year passes, we place a more solid focus on Character Education as the foundation of our school mission and vision. An emphasis on strong character development permeates school wide activities and is present in our annual School Improvement Plan.

Student involvement is an integral part of our efforts as we strive to createĀ a sense of belonging. A parent recently related how her children have integrated this into their home life. “I wanted to let you know that the character education program at school is really having an impact on my children.” She explained how the children were giving table manners lessons to their grandparents and how they stopped mid-argument to let each other know they were not being polite. Ending with, “I just want to thank Trautwein for promoting positive character.”

Signature Practices

Promising Practice: Manners Mentors Program
Each day for the first month of school, retired Trautwein faculty and staff took turns coming to the cafeteria to serve as manners mentors for our students, who practiced the etiquette and manners that were being taught in the classrooms and during class meetings.
Promising Practice: Character Education Days
Character Education Days begin with a student-led broadcast of morning announcements, a Character Club presentation, character story and clip, all presented through closed circuit television.

Testimonials

The things I adore about Trautwein are that everywhere you go you see signs of character. Like at PE, friends show perseverance for you while doing physical activities. And in music you will feel all the love and care while having the courage to sing out loud. I am proud to be a Tiger of Integrity.

Those kids just make us feel so good! I don't care what activity we do, whether it's singing, Bingo or Trivia, as long as they are with us, sitting next to us, what comes from them is the love. They are so well behaved and use such good manners. When they come in there's nothing like knowing they are looking for you. When they see us, their faces light up. They give their love; we give our hearts to them.
