To instill competence and character in students, the Wilson district decided 16 years ago to promote seven core character traits students should demonstrate: respect, responsibility, resourcefulness, caring, courage, honesty, and perseverance. They continue to be instilled today. We believe students who demonstrate good character will have a positive influence in the community.
Wilson’s Southern Middle School students and teachers started the 2011-2012 school year dedicated to making character an integral part of each day. Teachers, parents, and students collaborated to incorporate the district’s seven core values into the four “Bulldog B’s” These expectations are displayed throughout the building, and state: Be respectful; Be responsible; Be prepared; and Be a student of character. Exposure to the “Bulldog B’s” occurs in writing prompts, readings, cooperative activities, and advisory lessons. We incorporated a preventative and responsive anti-bullying program, Olweus, a level two program by the U.S. Dept. of Ed. and a blueprint model program.
