Bierbaum Elementary School
Saint Louis, MO
Mehlville School District

Bierbaum Elementary is a K-5 school located in suburban St. Louis. We are the largest of 10 elementary schools in the Mehlville School District. Bierbaum is a very welcoming environment for the 630 students and their families that we serve. Character education (CE) has been taught at Bierbaum for many years; during the past few years we have come together with firm convictions and strong practices to make CE a primary focus. Teachers and staff create classroom communities through lots of discussion and regular class meetings, by instituting core classroom values, and setting high expectations for learning. The administration is fully supportive and provides opportunities to further CE through workshops and training. We have built a strong sense of community by helping each other feel like we are ALL part of a team, where everyone is valued for their unique strengths and abilities. Principal Roberts says, “Our strength is in our diversity. We learn from each other and are better because of it.” CE is the process by which our team educates, practices, models and shares good character each day. CE is the foundation for ALL that we do. It is not a program, but a process that changes and grows to meet the needs of our diverse learners. We are very proud to share our journey and how it has made our school, community and world a better place.
