Since opening in 2002, our character education program has been the integral component of our curriculum. Our school motto, “Catch the W.A.V.E.,” inspires all stakeholders to behold “Winning Attitudes and Visions of Excellence!” Our philosophical approach to character education is clearly reflected in our mission statement: The mission of Doby’s Mill Elementary School, in partnership with our community, is to provide a safe, nurturing, innovative learning environment that empowers students with knowledge and skills to become self-disciplined, responsible, and productive citizens. Our school community builds consensus and values the teaching and modeling of core ethical values as implemented through our school-wide behavioral expectations. DME has implemented character education initiatives, such as the Rational Approaches to Practical School Discipline (RAPS) and the Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS), providing the structure for our school-wide behavioral expectations. Our goal is to teach the whole child in an established, caring community where students develop socially, emotionally, morally, and cognitively. In March 2011, our school was named a South Carolina School of Character! The success of our character education program is due to the continued support of our active and creative Parent Teacher Association, a School Improvement Council which advocates for our students, and faithful volunteers, generous business partners, and involved parents.
