Located on the fringe of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, Kay Granger Elementary (KGE) is a suburban neighborhood school in the Northwest ISD which is the second fastest growing school district in Texas. In 5 short years our enrollment has doubled. We have earned the highest TEA rating of Exemplary each year of existence and are currently a 2012 State School of Character. These accolades, as well as our reputation for strong parental involvement, are an attractive draw. The majority of our enrollment is white with growing populations of Asian, Hispanic, and Black students. With a focus on instilling responsible citizenship in our students, we began in 2007 modeling a program based on the 6 traits of character established by Character Counts (CC). We formed a committee consisting of staff, parents, students, and community members to determine our needs. From there we began a journey to permeate every facet of our campus and community life with character education. Staff development opportunities and parent information meetings continue to facilitate the implementation of the initiative. Utilizing materials from CC, CEP, and Love and Logic, we are dedicated to creating an environment where we continue to generate an intrinsic passion and vested interest in teaching, modeling, and exemplifying the character traits of caring, citizenship, trustworthiness, respect, fairness ,and responsibility.
