At Mehlville High School our chronicled character education journey began 3 years ago. We started by building a unified school culture around excellence and ethics. Stakeholders include students, parents and staff working to develop a mission and identity. Students and high expectations had to come first, so the five R’s were selected: Respect, Rigor, Relevance, Relationships and Results. These values were established to set a bar for learning and behavior for all. As we continued our journey our community felt the five R’s were too lengthy and a touchstone was developed. “Mehlville Motivates” expresses commitment to the five R’s and acts as a reminder of our values and solidifies our school community. Student and parent voice have increased along with reflection of our practices. The character education journey at MHS started years ago as individual teachers saw the value of teaching morals and values. Teacher Advisory Periods were in place and offer the power of connectedness. Students and advisors form a connection with each other as students loop through high school. Numerous committees engage staff in aligning practices for teaching and learning, always keeping ethics and high expectations in mind. Service learning continues to be a mainstay and has recently generated “MHS Gives Back,” sending food home with hungry students on the weekends. Our teams and clubs participate in community service and good sportsmanship as evidenced in this application.
