Quarton Elementary School, built in 1927, is located in downtown Birmingham and named after a historic Birmingham family. In the front of the school sits a statue of bears that was donated by artist Frederick Marshall. The bear is the Quarton mascot. When you enter Quarton, you are greeted by a mural of student made ceramic tiles. Our touchstone “The Quarton Quote” is displayed, in the entry way, classroom, and office to remind students, parents, and visitors of Quarton’s vision. In the Birmingham School District, we are striving to produce global citizens of the 21st Century. Quarton believes that character education plays a critical role in getting students prepared for their life. As Quarton has continued on the Character Education path we know it is imperative to have all stakeholders involved in the process. As a school, we feel very strongly that our parent community, teachers, and students are aware of and involved in character education. The staff has had many opportunities for professional development and also devoted staff meeting time to make character education a priority. Morning Meeting training, for the entire staff, was crucial in designating a time to teach our character lessons. ”The Quarton Quote” brough parents on board through home activities in 2011-2012. Quarton received a promising practice for these efforts. During our re-energizing process, we utilized the District Character Education Liaison, Claudia St. Amour who modeled and co-taught lessons with the classroom teacher.
