West Maple Elementary sees character education not only as an initiative but a dedication to the in-depth process required to develop the character traits of our students. This starts with our school mission statement, “to ensure learning for all.” We are focused not only on academic growth of our students but how they develop as global citizens of character. Distinctive, precise steps are taken ensuring this mission is met. The path we travel is developed to meet the needs of all stakeholders. Guiding us along this twisting road is our Character Education Committee. This committee consisting of parents and staff use data to guide our journey. Last year we decided to apply to become a National School of Character. With great intentions we gathered data, acquired artifacts, and wrote about the program we are so passionate about. We became a State School of Character but fell short of our ultimate goal. Undeterred we rose above our disappointment and took to heart the feedback received from CEP. Through this feedback we immediately got to work establishing groups consisting or parents, students, and staff to address our needs. Many changes were made which are displayed throughout our application. In making these changes we have found student ownership of our character goals growing. As we move toward continually improving in our character education efforts, West Maple will continue to be methodical and dedicated to fostering character growth in all.
