Veterans Day Breakfast and Celebration
Brennan Woods Elementary School hosts an annual Veterans Day Breakfast and Celebration. Faculty and students begin preparations for this event in early September, as third grade students being research and interviewing a veteran for their Veterans Day essays. Students decorate  ‘dog tags’ in honor of a family member or friend who is a veteran. These are displayed in the school hallway for weeks before and after Veterans Day. Students collect money for the “Power of 11 Cents” program, benefiting the Missouri Military Families Relief Fund. Students invite veterans they know to join them at school on Veterans Day for a special breakfast and celebration to honor them. On Veterans Day, local VFW members carry the colors and lead the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. Two students are chosen to share their Veterans Day essays.  One grade level performs a medley of patriotic songs and readings. Students from our Character Kids Club present a check for the "Power of 11 Cents.”  Veteran guest speakers tell students about their lives in the service and the sacrifices they and their families have made.  Finally, students and guests rise silently as “TAPS” is played by a single bugler. Students at BWE learn about character, respect, service, and sacrifice through this program, as its effects can be observed far beyond Veterans Day.
