Claymation with Character Project
The Claymation with Character Project is an integration of art, computers, and character education. Sixth grade students selected a character trait to represent in their project. Students worked together in small groups to define and create a story board for their particular character trait. Students created clay figures and constructed backgrounds for each scene. Digital pictures were taken of each scene and were imported into a new software program where students learned to create a short movie to which dialogue, sound and other special effects were added. Students specifically learned how to: 1) collaboratively solve problems that arise when creating 3-D figures and sets, 2) use scale and proportions to create depth and a degree of realism in their work, 3) use the new Frames movie editing software, and 4) connect character traits to everyday life and actions. The semester project took place in art and computer class. An all school character assembly was held at the end of the semester as the culminating activity. The Claymation with Character Project made a positive impact on the school. Students reported in classroom meetings they felt this activity taught them to cooperate better and be more patient with each other when facing adversity.
