Intergenerational Connections and Relationship Building
Tasty food and lively conversations are featured during our school’s monthly theme-based Intergenerational Brunches promoting an outreach to senior citizens as they match up with our fifth graders. This forum was established when staff members collaborated to enhance our monthly grade level sponsored attribute assemblies. The “Senior Set” includes the grandparents of some of our students, the parents of some of our staff members, and some retired teachers from our school community. The fifth graders are responsible for interviewing their senior guests over a brunch that is catered by the students and their parents. The fifth grade families coordinate the meals, table decorations, and welcoming flowers. All of the fifth graders participate in the brunches over the course of the school year. The school psychologist works with the fifth graders to develop interview questions that will elicit responses regarding the attribute of the month. As the students interview their senior partners, they write the responses down. These documented words of wisdom are shared during our attribute assemblies and over the public address system during our morning announcements. Parents, guardians, and people from the community are invited to attend the monthly school-wide assemblies.
