"Boomerang" Advisory-Tutorial
Floresville High School fosters caring relationships between faculty, staff and students through implementation of a daily advisory-tutorial period, called “Boomerang.” The purpose of the period is to provide students opportunities to make connections and build relationships outside their normal peer groups for voice on critical issues and campus concerns, as well as focus attention on academic success. Students learn the value of goal-setting to promote academic success, as well as explore career choices and passions, and develop good character to prepare them for the future. The focus on academic success has contributed to improved test scores and a reduction in the number of student failures. The science department documented a 14.8 percent increase in the number of students passing checkpoint assessments, while the school showed a decreasing trend in the number of students failing at the end of each reported grading cycle from first 9-week report card in 2007-2008 to second 9-week report card in January 2009. One teacher stated that seeing students and teachers helping and tutoring one another, “…shows how truly committed we are as a learning community to our mission of ‘Empowering all learners through character and performance to succeed.'”
