Classroom Buddies
Floresville Primary staff believes that students need to be good role models of character in the community and in the world. To instill these values at an early age, Floresville Primary has implemented a “classroom buddies” program that allows their primary students to mentor other students in different grades. This program involves all 567 first and second grade students and all 27 first and second grade teachers. A first grade classroom is partnered with a second grade classroom to model appropriate character through technology lessons, community involvement lessons, and lessons on the pillars of character. The classes meet at a minimum of once every two weeks for 30 minutes. During buddy time, classrooms perform skits to demonstrate the character traits, create placemats for a local nursing home, read library books to each other, and even celebrate special occasions. Over the course of this program, Floresville students have built strong relationships with one another, allowing that personal connection to transform into personal responsibility. As a result, students build better social and leadership skills. The program also strengthens the sense of community on campus.
