Family "Character Connection" Homework
Character Connection is “family homework” that families complete together, which complements character lessons being taught at school. Just as academic homework strengthens students’ skills and allows parents to be involved in the work of school, so too, Character Connection allies students’ families with character education efforts. When parents can actively participate in the Grant School Family, children come to understand that all the adults in their lives are united in these common goals. When the language and goals are made explicit in all areas of a child’s life, the impact is felt exponentially. Character Connections go to every home and to every parent, allowing them to be full partners in their child’s character development. Teachers have remarked that the Grant School Family allows them to work character expectations and applications into all academic content, and in the same way parents have reported that Character Connections have given them the opportunities and tools to teach their children the values that are important to them. The assignments help them to focus on specific ideas and skills that they may not have taught or focused on in the past and to be consistent with the messages taught at school.
