Humane School Initiative
“The Humane School Initiative” is an after-school club; the Humane Education Alternative Club, with the objective of helping students understand issues related to peace, social justice, and sustainable living in ways that involve critical and creative thinking, a respect for other people and cultures, and a reverence for life. The club offers participation in four sub-committees which meet separately in addition to the general gathering of all club members. Students participate in school-wide monthly challenge and can propose, design and implement a supporting event relevant to any the four main focuses: environmental degradation, animal cruelty and abuse, unethical consumerism and social injustices. Students create and participate in school-wide awareness events, such as an annual “Pep Rally for Peace,” and the “Eco-Friendly Fashion Show” supporting The No Logo Campaign (Nologo.org.uk), that includes a collection of garments created by the students with recycled materials. As a result of involvement in the club, students seem empowered to question and to voice possible solutions. There are also many perceived common goals among students that did not exist before the club.
