Healing Choir
The Healing Choir meets once a week after school and rehearses songs that are meant to bring hope and joy. It involves students from kindergarten to fourth grade who perform at many service-learning events throughout the year, including Make a Difference Day, Martin Luther King “Sing out for Justice,” concert, and Empty Bowls. The goal of this group is to help students understand the meaning not only to the words of the songs, but why they are performing it to begin with. For example, on the Martin Luther King “Sing Out for Justice” concert, we sang two songs, “You Raise Me Up,” and “Shed a Little Light.”  We took a lot of time not only to learn the words and melodies to these songs, but also to understand the meaning behind them. As this was done more and more, it affected the sound of the song. There was a spirit in the song that was not there before. The program complements the school curriculum of studying civil rights. A concert was held on Martin Luther King Day, which is technically a day off for both students and teachers. Thus, students and teachers volunteered their time to give back to a cause that is so important in our country’s history.
