The Laker Delivery System
Eager to provide an inclusive opportunity for special needs students, staff members and custodians created The Laker Delivery System to develop good character at Lake Riviera Middle School. Students involved in this program distribute classroom supplies and Value of the Month posters to staff throughout the building. The goal of The Laker Delivery Service is to increase the morale and confidence of the special needs community enabling them to feel that they are a valuable part of the larger school community. With the help of the custodial staff, seventh grade students working in a special needs, self-contained class receive orders bi-monthly from teachers for general classroom supplies. Paired with a custodian or staff member, student partners fill and sort orders which are checked and delivered to classrooms. Character education is a focal point of this program as it provides students with an opportunity for moral action. Students develop good character as this program teaches patience, cooperation and teamwork while providing a valuable service. As one student proudly states, “I feel really great when we do it because I get to help a lot. I get to talk to a lot of different teachers.” Success of this program has given the students of The Laker Delivery System a sense of belonging and has been very well received by the staff and administration of RMS. Staff has been so impressed with the efficiency of the The Laker Delivery System their service is in high demand.
