Caps for Chemo
Students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas Elementary learned about cancer and about the many children with cancer whose families cannot pay for their medical expenses; namely chemotherapy. Collaborating with Florida International University (FIU) students, and researching the statistics and touching stories of children with cancer, students decided to collect “Caps for Chemo. The effort has been school-wide as the students who initially became interested, have educated their peers about the difficult journey of children with cancer. Students wrote letters to parents and friends to elicit help. They also created posters and flyers to post around school and at local businesses. Students collected data to track results. The awareness brought about by this practice has changed students in many ways. The collaboration between the school and FIU has demonstrated to students that even though they are children they can do something to help others. Reflection papers written in several classrooms are evident of this as children are writing about the fact that it is not simply about money but about what you do for others that makes a really big difference.
