Operation Fairytale
Operation Fairytale was created during the 2004-05 school year. The program (based on donations from district employees and local businesses) provides prom dresses, shoes, accessories, and gift certificates to restaurants free of charge to female seniors whose families are economically challenged and cannot afford the expenses. To participate in the program the girls have to write an essay or poem on "Why they should be chosen for Operation Fairytale" and participate in a community service project. While participating in the program, the girls cannot obtain any of the following: excessive absences, out-of-school suspensions, or failing grades in their major subjects. Participation in this program encourages students to be responsible for their actions and choices, improves their self-esteem and self-worth, and teaches them how to "act like a lady." In 2005 the program included 11th and 12th graders. In 2005 there were 31 participants and in 2006 there were 48. Due to the availability of dresses, the program became only available to seniors in 2007. In 2007 there were 18 participants, in 2008 there were 20, and in 2009 there were 16.
