"Big Brother" Mentor Program
Relationships are the motivation for learning. Roosevelt’s philosophy is to have a relationship based school that is built on trust, love and connection. With the use of the big brother mentor program the little brothers have been able to establish a relationship that is ongoing and supportive with a positive role model. Connectedness governs our behavior and many of the students needed to establish someone in their life that they could talk to, partner with and feel safe together. The big brothers come over weekly and follow a systematic routine that includes a greeting ritual, weekly goal setting, reading together, a gross motor activity and a goodbye ritual. What we have learned is what we offer others we strengthen in ourselves. The big brothers have experienced changes in their personal lives that it has made numerous benefits for them in school, on the football field and in life. The little brothers have made tremendous gains in both academic and behavior. The decrease of referrals has been dramatic and the smile on the boys who are meeting with success is priceless!
