"Sportsmanship with Dr. Seuss" Day
During “Sportsmanship with Dr. Seuss Day” student-athletes promote literacy and sportsmanship with elementary students. Student-athletes define sportsmanship, explain its importance, and discuss how it’s practiced on their teams. They play games and practice good sportsmanship with elementary students as well. In celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday high school students also read sports themed and Dr. Seuss books to elementary students. They discuss the characters, plots, and morals of the stories.  During breaks between presentations SHS students write thank you notes to their role models who have taught them positive character traits. They are then sent during National Sportsmanship Week.  As a final gesture of good sportsmanship, SHS students donate box tops to the elementaries saving for new playground equipment. The day’s success is seen in the excitement among all students participating in different activities. Elementary students love meeting high school students, learning from them is even greater. They are quick to share ideas about books they love to read and how they will practice sportsmanship everyday. SHS students report their fondness in working with younger students, feeling like they make a difference.  No doubt, the caring relationships formed between students across grade levels are another success of this day!
