"Hawk Time" Advisory
Mondays in Hawk Time are “Read 4 Character” days where the entire school reads a selected book aloud, such as Seedfolks, Crossing Jordan, and Yes, Pa. Each student and teacher has a copy of a book which is purchased by the principal. Students then discuss the book as it relates to character education and how they might incorporate those lessons into their everyday lives while the school counselor helps to illustrate specific character points during the morning announcements. Tuesdays are the “C+ Theme” days. Teachers can continue discussions and class meetings from the previous day’s reading or choose an activity that emphasizes the character word of the month. These activities provide time for students to discuss the character trait and reflect on how that trait applies to their lives. Wednesdays are “Service Learning/School Community” days. Hawk Times students are rearranged by interests into different focus areas: School, Local, World, Environment and Health/Wellness communities. These Hawk Times take on projects to educate and connect to the community and partner with places such as St. Jude’s, the American Cancer Society and St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Thursdays are “Academic Advisement” days. During this time, students may seek out additional academic help as needed. This may include accelerated reading, tutoring, or homework time. In addition, Hawk Time teachers use this time to talk with each of their advisory class students to set goals in terms of time management, organization, and study skills to help develop a sense of responsibility. Fridays are “C+ Team Time”. These days are set aside to choose grade level events and teambuilding activities. Many grade levels use this time for field trips and community activities, with a goal to have unified and grade specific events.
