Ability Awareness Puppets
The counselor and fifth grade students work diligently to prepare the puppets' show for our primary grades. These plays occur during our Ability Awareness week each year. The puppets each have a disability. The puppets interact in a friendly play which talk about their individual disability and how it affects their life and interactions with others. The puppet team is composed of eight fifth-grade students – two students from each classroom. They come to the counselor’s office daily for approximately two weeks to practice their parts. The fifth grade puppet teams learn how to positively interact with younger children by being responsible, being respectful and being caring, and the younger children are taught how to be good listeners and behave in a cooperative and respectful manner. Because of the plays, and the question and answer session at the end of the show, the students gain an awarenss of diversity, accepting others, and tolerance. They have shown a greater understanding of how to treat all people with kindness and how to interact with others in an appropriate manner.
