Character Carl
Character Carl is a fictitious character created by the character education committee that visually represents a student displaying a profound character. A collaborative effort by Bayless Elementary’s staff helped form this cute chubby cheeked student. The window cling characterization of a boy, wearing his school-spirit shirt, picking up litter and putting it in the wastebasket, sends a visual message of social responsibility and caring towards the community and school, all of which represent the foundation from which the Missouri State School of Character for 2009 award was bestowed. Writing assignments on Carl’s whereabouts, counting and charting his sightings, self-reflection activities and sharing stories of his sightings are often explored in the classrooms. Students connect the importance of character traits with the global desire of respect for all, the adult world of work, and in a variety of settings.
