Recycling Rocks!
Schools produce tons of waste in the form of used paper each year. Students need to understand the importance of recycling, as it pertains to our moral responsibility to preserve the environment for future generations. Students enrolled in a special education daily living class are asked to participate in the Recycling Club. Every Friday students go to each of the rooms in the high school, including the offices, and collect the smaller blue recycling bins full of paper. To show the impact recycling has on our world, field trips are organized to emphasize that point. The students understand the importance of recycling, and they even correct peers when someone throws paper in the trash rather than the recycling bin. Being part of the club helps them to gain confidence as well as pre-employment skills (staying on task, not disrupting others who are trying to work, taking redirection, etc.) Participating in this program helps students understand the importance of caring for our world, take action to make good choices, and develop habits that will carry over into adult life.
