McTeacher Night
Dixie Hollins High School's "McTeacher night" is a chance for the school to earn money and model character traits. The school has formed a partnership with local McDonalds, which allows six teachers of the various departments to work together at McDonalds and earn money for their school. McTeacher Night contributes to character education development through modeling of character traits by the teachers. Prior to working the event, teachers speak to their classes about what they gain from participating in the event. Teachers gain the opportunity to model the importance of “self-less acts” and character traits in action. By working McTeacher night, teachers model responsibility, cooperation, and self-motivation within a community setting. Furthermore, since teachers are not paid individually, it demonstrates the importance of intrinsic motivation: working for someone else’s benefit. Students realize that they benefit from the profits of McTeacher Night through various character education activities. Some examples are: semester celebrations, monthly character trait celebrations, and supplies for the “Bohnet Buck Store” (students earn Bohnet Bucks, which can be used to purchase a variety of items).
