Traits of a Duncan Athlete
Realizing that sportsmanship and character are related, the Physical Education (PE) staff initiated a program called Traits of a Duncan Athlete. The Six Pillars of Character is the framework for the Character Education program at Duncan Elementary School and the model for incorporating Character Education into theĀ curriculum. PE staff met with and consulted the Character Committee for training and recommendations for initiating the character component into the PE curriculum. Using school-wide monthly character traits, the PE staff began to incorporate each of the Six Pillars of Character into their lesson plans. Every month, the PE teachers explained how the character trait of the month related to the games and skills being taught in PE. For example, while teaching golf lessons, character traits such as trustworthiness, responsibility, and fairness were incorporated into the lesson. The teacher explained how taking care of your score card requires that you be responsible and not lose your card, trustworthy by keeping an accurate score, and fair by playing by the rules.
