East Elementary School
Jefferson, Wisconsin

Birthday Club
Monthly, East Elementary celebrates students' birthdays by inviting students and their teachers to have lunch at the special birthday table. The school's Character Education Steering Committee believes that students display positive behaviors, when they are enjoying lunch with their adult role models. The goal is to provide teachers with another opportunity to interact with their students,  thereby learning more about their lives outside of school. This helps to build and maintain the much needed positive and trusting relationships. Each month, the cafeteria supervisor identifies a date to celebrate that month’s birthdays, doubling up on some months to include summer birthdays. Classroom teachers are formally invited to join the “birthday kids” from their classroom for lunch on that day. The students celebrating birthdays also receive a personal invitation to sit at the special “birthday table” with their teachers. Not only do the birthday guests have the honor of having lunch with their teachers, they are also greeted with a personalized place tag, a festive birthday straw, and best of all, a “yummy” ice cream or cupcake treat. Clearly, this montly birthday celebration becomes a nice tradtion of the school.
