Multi-Cultural Night for ELL Families
The Forder Elementary's Multi-Cultural Night was created to foster relationships with ELL families and encourage them to take an active role in the school community and their children’s education. The event took place early in the school year with the ELL staff, the district Bosnian liaison, the district social worker and the principal in attendance. The content focused on the strengths of the ELL program currently in practice within the district, resources available and concerns facing ELL families. At the end of the night, families were asked to complete a survey regarding their experiences within the district and what they hoped to achieve in the coming year. Through the survey, families asked for additional academic support for their students. In response, the ELL staff implemented an after-school tutoring program for ELL students. The program was a tremendous success, resulting in a positive change in academics and confidence for ELL students. To continue the conversation with the ELL community, a secondary survey will be sent out in May to help make the upcoming school year a success.
