Miss Manners
Hattie Mae Manners is an elderly, quick-witted Southern socialite whose top priority at this stage of her life is to impart students at an early age with the time-honored life lessons her own grandmother taught her. Hattie Mae decided to adopt Fuguitt Elementary as her final project, after hearing of horrible tales of poor behavior from her cousin, Rene’ Spaights, Fuguitt’s Guidance Counselor. Once a week, Miss Manners adorns herself in exquisite garb replete with gloves and a mink stole, and boards a train in South Carolina - Largo, Florida bound. Through humor, and over cups of hot tea and a plate of cookies, students learn how to integrate the character traits of honesty, self-control, respect, motivation, and responsibility into their everyday lives. The humorous approach and love for Miss Manners captures the attention of students which leads to highly-engaging and meaningful character discussions. Good, old-fashioned manners are being practiced around the campus, as children are heard saying, please, and thank you – even to the point of opening doors for others.
