Compassion: Cancer
The Louzaders' eight-year-old son, Mason, was diagnosed with a Stage Four brain tumor just three weeks after moving to Hawk Point and starting a new school. Two days after his diagnosis in September, Mason underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. To show their support for Mason, students made a "wishing blanket". Every student tied a knot to a quilt and made a wish for him. Compelled to help, students hosted a "Hats On" day to show their support for the Louzader Family. Families in the community and the Hawk Point's Parent Teacher Organization began helping the family in the ways they can. Mason has recovered well, and is learning to talk and move again, while the school community keep him in their hearts and support him every day. The school continues to learn about cancer through character service projects such as "Pennies for Patients" and having Mason's personal nurse comes give mini lessons to individual classrooms on stem cell brain cancer. The school is hoping Mason can come back before the end of the school year, so they can show their compassion in person.
