One Book, One School
Indian Land Middle School believes that character education is vital to the students’ futures. The school confidently asserts that one’s attitude does affect one’s altitude; thus, the staff often marries ethics and positive character into their science, social studies, fine arts, and language arts lessons. One Book, One School character education initiative offers students and faculty members a unique opportunity to examine a novel’s themes and morals and infuse those lessons into their daily learning. Throughout the school term, students and faculty members participate in subject-specific and cross-curricular activities and crafts, and display artifacts depicting themes and character-related concepts found in the novel. A panel of students and school employees will discuss and select a service learning project that mirrors the character education and ethical themes in the novel. As a part of the project, students, faculty members, parents, and community members may attend and participate in informative assemblies and small group sessions. By doing so, the school is trying to instill in the children a desire to think outside the box and ascertain how they may both inspire and impact one another and society.
