Soup Supper Night (Noche de Sopas)
At Lakes International Language Academy, the first grade classes hold a unique celebration called ‘We All Eat Soup’ in which families bring soups and breads and share an evening meal. During the unit ‘We are all the same/we are all different,’ the classes study how the world is full of different people and cultures, and though it may seem that we are very different- we in fact share many, many similarities. As part of the unit the students journal about their own favorite soup and make the connection that we all like soup, but different kinds of soup. At the end of the unit, classes hold Noche do Sopas or Soup Supper Night for the children and their families to celebrate what we’ve learned about diversity. Families all contribute as some bring soup, others bread, and still others bring bowls, utensils, and desserts. The students develop character by demonstrating that sharing a meal can help form caring attachments to one another.
