It's a Girl Thing Club
It’s a Girl Thing Club was developed as a proactive approach to help reduce the number of bullying incidents while focusing on better social skills to enhance the school culture. The club uses a mentoring model -- high school girls participate to be mentors. They come to the elementary school for eight after-school sessions where they work with girls through theme based creative games, crafts, discussions, role plays, etc. Two facilitators are assigned to prepare for the club -- one facilitator would prepare the mentor training, lessons and activities for the day, and the other the schedule and materials for the sessions. Each theme focuses on a character trait and social skill to better improve interactions that girls may face during a regular school day. During each club session, the girls first meet to participate in a large group problem solving activity and large group Q & A. They then meet in groups with mentors to participate in a focused discussion, with activity and to practice what they are learning. The overall session usually pulls the large group back together with sharing and review of how the topic of the day can be used at school on a daily basis.
